AllStar Therapy Employees Join UConn Professor to Publish an Article on Gait and Posture in Short-Term Rehab Patients

Several years ago it was my dream to start a geriatric clinical residency program within our company. Last year April Barthuly, P.T. M.S. became our first graduate and we became only the 7th company in the country to receive credentialing from the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education. This year, April’s research in conjunction with Director of Residency, Walter Gorack and Dr. Richard Bohannon from the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Connecticut was published. I am providing a link to the article. It shows the importance of advanced education and how research on our patients can help everyone’s health in the future.

As you know, I’m a serial entrepreneur, always looking for new ways to innovate and therefore create new jobs. I found this article interesting and I agree, 2012 should be the Year of the Entrepreneur. Those of us who are experts and have had ongoing success enjoy helping Americans, especially young Americans who are just learning the ropes. See my blog post from May 24.

Every new year I make a resolution, as many Americans do, vowing to improve my life and the lives of others around me. 2012 will be no exception. This year, I am making that resolution as a Republican running for U-S Congress from the 5th district of Connecticut.

Washington is a mess and has been for many years. With this 112th Congress those making decisions that affect all of our lives sit in the U-S Senate and the House of Representatives. Along with the Democratic President there are 51 Democrats in the Senate, 2 Independents and 47 Republicans. In the House, which changed control this session, there are 193 Democrats and 242 Republicans. As we have witnessed none of them seem to be listening to the concerns of the average American. Remembering that more than half of the population is female it may be partly due to the fact that only 90 – 17 in the Senate and 73 in the House are women. Having a more equal representation of our population makeup would go a long way in bringing about a more healthy balance.

The majority of people who sit in the chambers of Congress seem more concerned with getting re-elected and keeping their powerful jobs than with creating new jobs for the millions of unemployed and underemployed Americans looking to them for help.

As recently as 25 years ago our elected officials would do what they were sworn to do, represent the best interests of their constituents. These men and women would work together to create solutions that would bring the best change for the American people. They crossed political isles to come up with workable strategies. Congress and the White House worked together to help get through tough times. What was best for the American people was most important to our politicians. We need to swing the pendulum back and return to this balance of power.

We can do it by sending the right people to Washington. My resolution is to be the person who will truly represent my constituents.

I believe that most people in Congress do want what’s best for the American people. They just don’t know how to leave their egos behind and make the tough decisions and cuts necessary to balance a budget or end uncertainty for Main Street so small businesses can create new jobs.

My resolution is to use my skills as a successful entrepreneur and teach my colleagues in Congress how to get these things done. Your political views shouldn’t matter. In order to bring a healthy balance of power back to Washington we need to elect people who are not career politicians, people who have been in the real world and have the true desire to work together to solve these real problems.

Sometimes being the owner means having a little bit of luck! That’s what happened at Blue Fox Bowling Center in Simsbury. The first time I stepped up to bowl… I rolled a STRIKE! I was there celebrating the opening of my newest venture, Blue Fox Laser Tag. I must admit I didn’t fare as well in the laser tag arena but it was all great fun. Always be ready, you just never know when lady luck will surprise you.

Memories of my mother are mixed with fond and important memories of her father, my grandfather. In truth, it was my grandfather, Stephen Hughes who empowered me to become who I am today. He, a man with only daughters, a 6th grade dropout, gave all of his children the gift of a college education. A gift that was extravagant at the time. But, Poppy believed in the strength of women and the importance of learning. That ideology was passed down and led to my encouragement to be whatever I wanted to be.

If not for my grandfather, perhaps my mother would not have broken from the traditional roles and learned the skills needed to be the breadwinner she was to become. Perhaps, I might have fallen prey to accept my place in life and not been driven to become a successful entrepreneur–unafraid of failure. And so, today I give thanks for both the males and the females in my family.

Family, friends and our community were such a part of my childhood that I also embraced them without thought. My mother’s love of country has led to my commitment to make a difference in the world of politics and give voice to those who either don’t have one or just haven’t found their vocal cords.

From Stephen Hughes to Rita Hughes Wilson the baton has now passed to me. I am now the matriarch of my own family and am passing on the same powerful tools and treasures to my children.

So, this year as I watch the leaves turn to shades of red, orange and yellow, I have a new understanding of this healing balance called the circle of life.

Have you ever had a brilliant business idea swimming around in your head but for some reason you just keep putting off writing the business plan and following through?
Well, it is time to “Just Dive In”.

Have you ever been high up on a platform or rock with a huge body of shimmering water in front of you wondering if you had the courage to just dive in? Of course, once you take the plunge and make the splash, the water will be cold and you might even hit hard—it could even hurt a bit. Ultimately, by fully committing and throwing caution to the wind, you find that the hurt becomes exhilarating and freeing all at the same time. The fear on initial take-off soon drifts into an adrenaline rush.

So, just dive in.
The first time you may just look over the edge and not go all the way but remember that it is more painful wading in and getting each part of your body cold slowly.

So, I say just dive in.
Get started today, tomorrow might be too late or you will find that they have closed the rock to risk-takers. Maybe they put up “no diving allowed signs”. So, don’t be timid, the future is now and the water is waiting for you.

That’s why I encourage my friends who have a wonderful idea to write up a business plan and get started. Yes, it can be frightening but also totally liberating.
So, just dive in….you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Achieve healing balance in your life by working from home to earn a new degree.

Entrepreneurship – “Think about what you want to make not who you want to work for.” Start as early as high school.

Government – Fewer taxes, less burdens will help business create new jobs.
